Tomi Lahren Showed Us Where The Line Is And We Shouldn’t Be Happy About It

Tomi Lahren when she see’s her name mentioned.

First off, this article isn’t really about Tomi Lahren. She does feature prominently in it, but before her blonde and overly perky head can grow any larger because of yet another mention of her name on Google and cause her to float away like Aunt Marge, she should be aware that she serves only as a sort of morality tale for the GOP.

For those of you who don’t know, Tomi Lahren is a Trumpette commentator in the style of Ann Coulter on The Blaze. For some reason she went straight from college to having her own show, being offered a career as a tender 21 year old that was looking for an internship. I try not to be bitter about this, because clearly it wasn’t her brains that lead her interviewer to offer her a chance at her own TV show when most recently graduated students her age are getting more calls from debt collectors than they are job opportunities.

But I digress.

Now that I’ve caught you up on the who, let’s talk about the what.

Tomi Lahren was recently suspended from The Blaze, which initial gave me warm fuzzy feelings and a sort of “couldn’t have happened to a more deserving person” kind of feeling. That is, until I found out what she had done that was so awful that she was finally suspended.

Picking out specific quotes that highlight the horror that is Lahren’s career is not as easy as it is with Ann Coulter, Donald Trump, or neo-nazi Richard Spencer.

Her most annoying statements are couched in cutesy euphemisms (you might be snowflake if…) in 3 minute long videos that go viral all over your facebook feed.

It doesn’t take long watching her videos to be offended by the sheer ignorance, subtle racism and sexism, and patronizing treatment of millennials, women, gay people, and anyone else that disagrees with her.

None of this, however, is why she was suspended from The Blaze. In fact coverage like that at her first job at One America News was why she was hired by The Blaze in the first place. None of her insensitive, unnecessarily divisive, clickbait videos and twitter posts caused Glenn Beck to reconsider the paycheck he cuts for her on a regular basis.

What did her in?

Her opinion on abortion.

I’m pro choice, and here’s why. I am a constitutional, y’know, someone that loves the Constitution. I’m someone that’s for limited government,” she said. “So I can’t sit here and be a hypocrite and say I’m for limited government but I think the government should decide what women do with their bodies. I can sit here and say that, as a Republican and I can say, you know what, I’m for limited government, so stay out of my guns, and you can stay out of my body as well.”

The Federalist

Of course, like her beloved Trump, Tomi’s opinion’s on everything are as changeable as Florida’s weather.

But that’s hardly the point here.

The point is that after every ignorant, absurd, slightly racist and pro-Trump (but I repeat myself) comment she’s made about black people, gay people, Hispanic people, and anyone else she takes it into her head to rant about this week…it’s her current opinion on abortion that was just too much for conservatives to handle.

This is indicative of the entire problem with the current Republican party. A person making the, frankly, most rational statement of their entire career (that’s not saying much) is where they decide they draw the line in what is acceptable. I do understand the argument made by people who are pro-life and I even respect that it is a reasonable argument based on their religion, what I disagree with is that their religious beliefs on this topic should be used to dictate government policy.

What I disagree with even more is the fact that anything and everything Tomi Lahren said before this wasn’t offensive enough for The Blaze to put her out to pasture a long time ago. There was a time when I would have argued with liberals when they said things like “Republicans are only pro-life until you leave the womb” but when things like this happen it makes me question why I spent so long defending Republicans in the first place. Sure, Glenn Beck had problems with Tomi before this, but this was the last straw for some reason, despite the fact that the last straw should have been about a half a dozen miles back for Beck, One America News, and the Conservative movement as a whole.

Conservatism and, once upon a time, the Republican Party was meant to represent individual liberty, small government, and capitalism (to be fair, Tomi doesn’t seem to believe in any of these either), but apparently now the the only important defining characteristic are issues like abortion. So important in fact that even if you reject any of the previous ideals and claim to be pro-life, you’ll get all the social conservatives to shill for you until their death.
