Netanyahu Addresses the UN: And the point was?

Don’t get me wrong, Netanyahu made good points, he’s a great speaker and he was 100% correct. Problem is it doesn’t matter. He was speaking to the UN and they listen in one ear and out the other. A moving and powerful speech left a far-from-full room completely unchanged.

Benjamin Netanyahu delivered another powerful speech in front of the UN General Assembly…well, some of it. Instead of a cool picture of a bomb or artifact that Netanyahu brings to his speeches, this one came without props. BibiBut it did come with silence. An intense forty-five second stare-down occurred. As you can see Netanyahu was not amused by the antics of the UN or the Iran deal for that matter, seen right.

“To borrow a line from Yogi Berra, the late, great baseball player and part time philosopher: When it comes to the annual bashing of Israel at the UN, it’s déjà vu all over again,” said Netanyahu.

And while the majority of his speech, once again focused on the so called Iran deal, he did spare a few moments to ask the UN a few questions. Sadly, they’re all rhetorical, because we all know the answer.

“When will the UN finally check its anti-Israel fanaticism at the door?” Right after North Korea becomes a real democracy.

“When will the UN finally stop slandering Israel as a threat to peace and actually start helping Israel advance peace?”  Right after Putin decides he was wrong, steps down, and lets the country freely elect a new president.

“When will you start working with Israel to advance peace and reconciliation and stop libeling Israel, stop inciting hatred and violence?” As soon as terrorism is defeated, radical Islam becomes a page in the history books and brutal dictators become nothing more than the stuff of nightmares. So….the answer to all of these is pretty much never. It’s quite sad really.

The big chunk of the speech focused on Iran and not the statements made the previous day by the democratically elected and currently ten year president of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas. CNN was critical of this and believed that Netanyahu could have spent more time on that instead of Iran. But the reality is, that Netanyahu’s speech was likely prepared ahead of time for one thing. Secondly, at this moment in time Iran is a larger threat than Abbas and his empty words. Abbas made several remarks the previous day, saying Palestinians were no longer bound by the Oslo Accords. But really, what’s the point in re-addressing what every intelligent person already knows is blatant lies and misinformation. Abbas has nothing but lies and giving him attention has the same affect as giving Donald Trump a soapbox.

But still Netanyahu did reiterate a few important facts, such as Israel’s commitment to keeping and protecting the holy sites of all faiths. “President Abbas, here’s a good place to begin: Stop spreading lies about Israel’s alleged intentions on the Temple Mount…What President Abbas should be speaking out against are the actions of militant Islamists who are smuggling explosives into the al-Aqsa mosque and who are trying to prevent Jews and Christians from visiting the holy sites.”  But Abbas’s comments are best saved for another article.

As for Iran, well they’re sending troops to Syria, they’re still funding Hezbollah and Hamas, and now they’re going to get a ton of money and sanction relief, and the makers of this deal, and its supporters believe this will be enough to keep Iran from getting Nuclear weapons. Those who are in direct threat from Iran obviously disagree.

The sad truth is that none of this matters. It was a beautiful speech with strength and power and truth. Yet, despite all of this, nothing will change. Iran still gets its deal while continuing to threaten Israel; Abbas continues to spread lies about Israel; and the UN will continue to jump down Israel’s throat every time it steps our of their imaginary line.

“So here’s a novel idea for the United Nations: Instead of continuing the shameful routine of bashing Israel, stand with Israel. Stand with Israel as we check the fanaticism at our door. Stand with Israel as we prevent that fanaticism from reaching your door. Ladies and Gentlemen, Stand with Israel because Israel is not just defending itself. More than ever, Israel is defending you.”
