In a famous poem, Martin Niemoller quoted:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me–and there was no one left to speak for me.
We have entered a time again in this country where groups, as well as individuals, are being suppressed by the federal government. They have suppressed blacks, Native Americans, and Japanese Americans. How many people spoke up for them? Why did they get treated that way? Why did the Japanese-Americans get put in camps & not German-Americans? If they are not doing anything illegal, then why are they being suppressed? Is our federal government really that scared of individuals?
I think so. Independent thought always scares the group think crowd. Whether it be political, religious, or high school cliches, they all fear rogue ones.
Currently, the federal government, with the help of the IRS, is targeting those who disagree with their ideology. We heard last year that the IRS was targeting Tea Party groups. A few days ago, Sen. Chuck Schumer calls for the IRS to help in silencing the Tea Party. They’re not even being sneaky about it. Yet, who will speak up? What about the Friends of Abe? A group of Hollywood conservatives being targeted by the IRS. This week, Dinesh D’Souza was indicted on federal charges for violating federal campaign laws. I don’t know the details, but its an interesting arrest considering he made a documentary called Obama’s America 2016.
Where do we draw the line? When will enough be enough? Do you think they will be satisfied with just conservative silence?
I wrote a newer version of Pastor Niemoller’s poem for modern day America.
First they came for the guns. I did not speak out because I did not own a gun.
Then they came for the religious. I did not speak out because I do not practice.
Then they came for our privacy. I did not speak out because I have nothing to hide.
Then they came for our words…
I left it open, because the future isn’t written yet. We have a chance to correct to this wrong. We must stand united or fall individually.
