Shooting Blanks

Ammo shortage? Not likely.

Have you heard that Border Patrol is facing an ammunition shortage?

Yeah, that seemed as unbelievable to me as the news that the Department of Homeland security is planning to stockpile over a billion rounds of ammunition, most of it in the form of hollow point rounds that are banned in the theater of war…definitely not purchased for military use then.

Wait a minute…isn’t Border Patrol part of DHS? Yes, yes it is. So where is this “ammunition shortage” coming from?

Theories on the internet abound as to what DHS is doing with this stockpile. They range from this being an attempt at de facto gun control to DHS planning an attack on American citizens.

I didn’t use to be big on conspiracy theories, but this administration might have changed that for me.

Whether any of these myths are true or not (I personally haven’t come to any conclusion of my own) the facts is that the Department of Homeland Security does not appear to actually have an ammunition shortage of any sort.

So why are they sending memos like this one to Border Patrol?

Enforcement Personnel,

Due to budget concerns and ammunition availability, we will not be getting issued any proficiency ammunition for next quarter.  In addition to these reductions, we are also being limited to qualification ammo only.   What this means to you is that you will not receive the normal 150 rounds for practice and we will not have any extra ammunition for a combat course following normal qualifications.

Even certain chapters of the National Border Patrol Council are finding this difficult to believe.

Why is there an ammunition shortage? Why can’t Border Patrol agents get enough ammunition to maintain proficiency, especially at a time of increased cross-border smuggling and illegal activity? Where is all this ammunition going?

NBPC 2554

Something fishy is going on here, but I’ll admit that I think this has far more to do with this administration’s view on illegal immigrants and immigration (it’s a good thing I don’t work for AP, if I did, I couldn’t use that term) than it does with gun control or some plan to strike at American citizens.

Why should we give Border Patrol weapons to stop illegal immigrants from crossing the border? It’s only, you know, their job.

I guess the administration realizes that they can’t get away with disbanding border patrol completely just yet, so hobbling them is the best they can do.

  1. I look forward to hearing either via print or video when someone with the power to get answers asks this question of someone with the ability to provide a (hopefully honest) answer.
